TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two buildings in Hualien were seen leaning after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck on Wednesday morning (April 3).
The quake rocked northeast Taiwan at 7:58 a.m. and had an epicenter 25 km south-southeast of Hualien County Hall, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
An intensity level of 6+ was recorded in Hualien City. Immediately after the main quake, a nine-story building at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Chongqing Road was seen leaning at a steep angle, reported CNA.
Some residents are reportedly trapped inside and firefighters are working on getting them out. At least nine people have been rescued so far and an estimated five people are still waiting for help on the fifth and sixth floors and three in the basement, reported UDN.
Meanwhile, the first floor of a five-story building at the intersection of Beibin Street and Kangle Street collapsed. There were no reports of people injured or trapped in the building.
