TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The 20-member all-female Japanese dance troupe Avantgardey on Sunday (March 31) wowed the crowd at Kaohsiung's Megaport Music Festival with their take on local Taiwanese tunes.
Choreographer Akane was cited by CNA as saying that the group's song selection was based on recommendations from Taiwanese friends. The crew's repertoire included the theme song "Idol" from the anime "Oshi no Ko," the theme song "Bling-Bang-Bang-Born" from the manga series "Mashle: Magic and Muscles," as well as Taiwanese classic songs like "Bobee," "Sisters, Stand Up," and "Flower."
When asked by the news agency how they keep their bangs smooth while dancing, one of the group's members said, "This kappa-like hairstyle was designed by our hairstylist, but why the bangs don't move is a trade secret."
Akane said that in the past, their dance group often selected songs by female singers. However, this time, they surveyed popular Taiwanese songs and selected ones that matched the style of their dance group.
"For example, we chose 'Flower' by Wu Bai. Not only do I really like it, but the other members of the group also enjoy it," said Akane. The troupe practiced for one month for this performance, according to Akane.
Avantgardey was founded by Akane, a consultant from the dance department of Osaka Prefectural Tomioka High School. Their performances are characterized by closely synchronized dance routines, with a hairstyle featuring neat bangs and short bob haircuts, along with retro-style school uniforms.
After gaining attention on the TV show “America's Got Talent,” they became popular worldwide.
