TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed Laura Rosenberger, the head of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), will visit Taiwan between March 31 and April 6.
The foreign ministry issued a press release on Sunday (March 31) just before 8 p.m. and said Rosenberger would visit the Taiwan alongside U.S. State Department’s Asia-Pacific Bureau advisor Michael Pignatello.
Rosenberger and Pignatello will reportedly meet with high-level officials in Taiwan from various ministries, and with leaders from different sectors of society.
The ministry said the trip is Rosenberger’s fifth to Taiwan. Rumors of Rosenberger’s trip first surfaced on Thursday, though neither the foreign ministry or AIT confirmed the rumors at that time.
The U.S. does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but AIT has served as the U.S.’s de-facto diplomatic presence in Taipei since 1979. AIT is a private, non-profit corporation that is funded by the U.S. government.
