TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – During the demolition of a real estate sales center in Taipei City on Saturday (March 30), the second floor collapsed and killed the driver of a skid steer loader.
Emergency services in Shilin District were informed of the accident at 1:44 p.m., per UDN. When a team arrived at the site, they were told the floorplates of the second floor had suddenly fallen and pinned the driver underneath.
When they freed the worker, they found he had passed away, the report said. The accident also led to fears that a section of the site was sinking, leading to it being cordoned off as a safety precaution.
None of the buildings and streets around the area were affected by the accident, with experts concluding there was no further danger.
The city government ordered demolition work to stop and fined the contractor NT$90,000 (US$2,800). The project can only resume when safety precautions are respected, city officials said.
