TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Green Party Taiwan lost its only elected official as Hsinchu City Councilor Liu Chong-hsian (劉崇顯) said Saturday (March 30) he was leaving the party.
He said no other political parties had invited him to join, though he did not exclude cooperating with like-minded groups, per CNA. The 33-year-old Hsinchu Science Park engineer was elected to Hsinchu City Council in 2022.
In a Facebook post, he said the Green Party had failed to win a single seat in the Jan. 13 legislative elections. In the party-list election for 34 out of 113 seats, it received 0.85% of the vote, far below the 5% threshold to win a seat.
Liu said that leaving the Green Party would allow him to focus on the task of monitoring Hsinchu City Government. He also mentioned the difficulty of working in politics as an outsider, and the problems of promoting one’s views in a party outside the mainstream.
