TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Teng Kai-wei (鄧愷威) is set to make his major league debut for the San Francisco Giants, according to multiple reports.
This will make him the 17th Taiwanese player to make it to the MLB (Major League Baseball). The 25-year-old from Taichung was recalled from the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats on Friday (March 29), said CBS Sports.
CNA reported that the move was announced before the Giants game against the San Diego Padres on Friday night. The news agency said Teng is the first Taiwanese pitcher in the past five years to play in the MLB.
The hefty right-handed starting pitcher is 1.93 meters tall and weighs 117 kg. His stats over the past three seasons in the minor leagues have been outstanding, ranking first among pitchers
He is said to have four pitching “weapons,” including a fastball, “well above average slider,” a curveball, and a change-up. He is expected to take over relief pitcher duties.
