TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A court on Thursday (March 28) handed American-born naturalized Taiwanese basketball star Quincy Davis (戴維斯) a one-month prison sentence for domestic violence, while his team announced that he would be suspended from play.
In the Taoyuan District Court's ruling, the judge said the physical altercation between Davis and his ex-wife indicated he needed to better manage his emotions and respect other's physical safety, reported CNA. The judge said that even though the two are divorced, they should “respect each other and handle disputes arising from the dissolution of their marriage rationally, rather than resorting to physical contact to resolve issues.”
The judge said Davis' denial of the allegations indicated a lack of reflection on his part regarding his “wrongful actions.” After taking into account the extent of injuries sustained by his ex-wife, his occupation, and his monthly income, the judge sentenced him to 30 days in prison, which can be commuted to a fine and is subject to appeal.
The New Taipei Kings of the P. League+ (PLG) on Thursday said it respects the court's decision and will suspend Davis from play and other team activities, per UDN. The team added that it will cooperate with a PLG Disciplinary Committee investigation and await its decision.
Davis, 41, was born in Los Angeles, but gave up his American citizenship in 2013 to play for Taiwan's national team in international competitions. He currently plays center for the New Taipei Kings.
On May 12, 2023, Davis was involved in a verbal confrontation with his ex-wife over the custody of his daughter in front of Chingpu Police Station in Taoyuan's Zhongli District. The dispute escalated into a physical altercation in which Davis injured his ex-wife's left hand and right forearm.
Due to his ex-wife having earlier filed a restraining order against him, Davis was arrested by the police. The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office decided to release him on NT$100,000 (NT$3,100) bail after questioning and subsequently charged him with domestic violence.
