TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – After taking action against drivers endangering pedestrians, the Legislative Yuan is turning its attention to obstacles on sidewalks, reports said Wednesday (March 27).
A fine of up to NT$150,000 (US$4,680) will await those who fail to remove fixed objects ruled to obstruct the passage of pedestrians, CNA reported. Official plans to increase the convenience and safety of pedestrians should be adjusted according to reviews conducted once every four years.
The central government needed to draw up relevant policies and plans, lawmakers said at a joint meeting of the Transportation Committee and the Internal Administration Committee. Local authorities had to conduct the reviews to improve the safety of sidewalks and pedestrian passages, with experts and social action groups invited to take part in the discussion.
In addition to removing obstacles, local governments also had to consider the width and number of sidewalks and work out improvements. The obstacles can include mailboxes, water, gas, and power installations, the lawmakers said.
