TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The U.S. and Lithuania reiterated the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait during a meeting between U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Lithuania Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis on Monday (March 25).
The two officials also discussed how developments in the Indo-Pacific impact the “Euro-Atlantic region” and shared their strategies on engaging with China. Campbell thanked Landsbergis for continuously working with like-minded democracies in the Indo-Pacific and emphasized U.S. support for the Baltic nation as it faces Chinese coercion for its close ties with Taiwan.
The meeting follows Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim's (蕭美琴) low-key visit to Lithuania, where she met with Lithuanian presidential candidates Dainius Zalimas of the Freedom Party and Giedrimas Jeglinskas of the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania” on Thursday (March 21), according Lithuanian national security expert Marius Laurinaviciusin.
Hsiao also met with pro-Taiwan lawmakers and delivered a speech at the Institute of International Relations and Political Sciences in Vilnius.
Taiwan and Lithuania set up representative offices in each other’s capital cities in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
