TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Coast Guard Administration (CGA) chased four Chinese fishing trawlers out of Taiwanese waters near Taichung, reports said Tuesday (March 26).
A series of incidents between vessels from China and the CGA began with the capsizing of a Chinese speedboat during a chase on Feb. 14, resulting in two deaths. Since then, there have been several maritime incidents, with one serving Taiwanese military officer still being held by China after he drifted off course during a fishing trip.
At 3:03 a.m. on Monday (March 25), the CGA received a report from fishers about Chinese ships in a restricted area 27 nautical miles (50 km) from Taichung, per CNA. By 6 a.m., a CGA vessel located two Chinese fishing trawlers 40 nautical miles from Xiangshan, Hsinchu County. While the ships were still in restricted waters, they were not actively fishing, the CGA said. They left around 7 a.m. after the CGA broadcast a warning.
However, a similar incident occurred again during Monday afternoon. Two other Chinese trawlers appeared 30 nautical miles from Taichung City’s Songbo Harbor. The CGA also told them to leave restricted waters, which they did within the hour.
