TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A fire broke out on the factory roof of major electronics manufacturer Wistron Co. Ltd. on Monday (March 25) in the Hsinchu Science Park.
The fire broke out at around 10 p.m. on Xin'an Road, reported UDN. The Hsinchu City Fire Bureau was alerted at 10:22 p.m. and dispatched 23 vehicles and 54 firefighters.
Firefighters evacuated 433 people, including 365 night shift workers at the Wistron factory and 68 night shift workers at a nearby Young Optics Co., Ltd facility.
The fire was brought under control by 2 a.m., while no injuries were reported among those evacuated.
Based on a preliminary fire department investigation, the blaze was caused by a malfunction in an outdoor air conditioning unit on the rooftop of the 6th floor.
Some Zhubei City residents reported on social media about smelling smoke from the fire. Hsinchu Mayor Kao Hung-an (高虹安) said over Facebook on Monday night that the Central Weather Administration said winds were blowing in a south-southwesterly direction, affecting the eastern district of Zhubei City and advised the public to keep their doors and windows closed and wear a mask when going out.
