TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 65,385 local COVID cases on Thursday (May 12), a 14% increase from the previous day.
CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) also confirmed 61 imported cases, bringing the total case count to 570,870. Chen announced 17 deaths, bringing the country's COVID death toll to 968.
Local cases
The local cases include 31,102 males, 34,146 females, and 137 cases still under investigation, ranging in age from under five to their 90s. With 23,788, New Taipei City reported the most cases, followed by 10,751 in Taipei City, 10,039 in Taoyuan City, 3,830 in Taichung City, 3,261 in Kaohsiung City, 2,332 in Tainan City, 1,876 in Keelung City, 1,348 in Hsinchu County, 1,259 Hualien County, 1,186 in Yilan County, 1,061 in Pingtung County, 1,000 in Changhua County, 851 in Hsinchu City, 760 in Miaoli County, 613 in Yunlin County, 392 in Taitung County, 354 in Nantou County, 362 in Chiayi County, 172 in Chiayi City, 78 in Kinmen County, 67 in Penghu County, and five in Lienchiang County.
COVID deaths
The 17 COVID deaths announced on Thursday include nine men and eight women ranging in age from their 60s to their 90s, all of whom had been classified as severe cases. Fifteen had a history of chronic disease, and six were not vaccinated. Their dates of diagnosis ranged from April 29 to May 9 and dates of death from May 5-10.
Imported cases
The 61 imported cases include 25 males and 36 females ranging in age from their teens to their 70s. They arrived between March 16 and May 11, and their country of origin is still under investigation.
COVID case statistics
Since the pandemic began, Taiwan has carried out 9,284,358 COVID tests, with 8,712,480 coming back negative. Of the 570,870 confirmed cases, 12,052 were imported, 558,764 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three from a cargo pilot cluster, one is unresolved, and 14 are under investigation.
Up until now, 968 individuals have succumbed to the disease. Of the 953 deaths from local infections, 463 were in New Taipei; 346 in Taipei; 41 in Keelung; 36 in Taoyuan; 16 in Changhua County; 14 in Hsinchu County; seven in Taichung County; six in Yilan County; five in Hualien County; four in Pingtung County, three in Miaoli County; two each in Kaohsiung City, Yunlin County, Nantou County, Tainan City, and Taitung County; and one each in Hsinchu City and Chiayi County. The 15 other deaths were imported cases.
