TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 50,780 local COVID cases on Tuesday (May 10), an increase of 26% over the previous day.
CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) also confirmed 48 imported cases, bringing the total case count to 448,323. Chen announced 12 deaths, bringing the country's COVID death toll to 943.
Local cases
The local cases reported include 24,799 males, 25,964 females, and 17 cases under investigation, ranging in age from under five to their 90s. New Taipei City reported the most cases with 16,906, followed by 10,283 in Taipei City, 7,006 in Taoyuan City, 3,346 in Taichung City, 2,552 in Kaohsiung City, 1,774 in Tainan City, 1,734 in Keelung City, 1,279 in Yilan County, 933 in Hsinchu County, 759 Hualien County, 736 in Changhua County, 680 in Pingtung County, 658 in Hsinchu City, 620 in Yunlin County, 523 in Miaoli County, 307 in Nantou County, 222 in Taitung County, 216 in Chiayi County, 138 in Chiayi City, 64 in Penghu County, 43 in Kinmen County, and one in Lienchiang County.
COVID deaths
The 12 COVID deaths announced on Tuesday include eight men and four women ranging in age from their 20s to their 90s, all of whom were classified as severe cases. Ten had a history of chronic disease, and three were not vaccinated. Their dates of diagnosis ranged from April 28 to May 8 and dates of death from May 6 to May 8.
Imported cases
The 48 imported cases include 18 males and 30 females ranging in age from under 10 to their 60s. They arrived between April 20 and May 9, and their country of origin is still under investigation.
COVID case statistics
Since the pandemic began, Taiwan has carried out 9,074,309 COVID tests, with 8,636,383 coming back negative. Of the 448,323 confirmed cases, 11,963 were imported, 436,306 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three from a cargo pilot cluster, one is unresolved, and 14 are under investigation.
Up until now, 943 individuals have succumbed to the disease. Of the 928 deaths from local infections, 448 were in New Taipei; 343 in Taipei; 41 in Keelung; 32 in Taoyuan; 16 in Changhua County; 14 in Hsinchu County; seven in Taichung County; six in Yilan County; five in Hualien County; four in Pingtung County, three in Miaoli County; two each in Kaohsiung City and Yunlin County; and one each in Hsinchu City, Nantou County, Tainan City, Taitung County, and Chiayi County. The 15 other deaths were imported cases.
