TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Over the course of two days, Miaoli County has announced that 51 foreign workers have tested positive for COVID-19 along with one Taiwanese worker.
At a press conference on Wednesday (June 16), Miaoli County Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang (徐耀昌) said 21 foreign workers at high-tech factories who have been undergoing quarantine in government facilities have tested positive. Of these, 19 are men and two are women.
On Thursday (June 17), Hsu announced 31 more cases, including 30 foreign workers and one Taiwanese employee. Among the cases announced on Thursday, 24 are men and seven are women.
Hsu stressed that all have been secluded in quarantine centers for eight to 12 days. Therefore, he concluded said that local communities need not worry about transmission from these cases.
On his Facebook page, Hsu stated that as of Thursday, 521 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Miaoli County. Out of these, 426, or 82 percent, are foreign workers, while 95, or 18 percent, are Taiwanese citizens.
According to the Miaoli County Government, Zhunan Township, where the initial outbreak occurred among migrant workers, has had 348 cases. Neighboring Toufen City comes in second with 132 cases, followed by Zaqiao Township with 21, Houlong Township with 10, Saswan Township with three, and Gongguan and Nazhuang townships with one each.
Among Miaoli County's 18 townships and cities, nine have yet to report a single case of the disease.
In terms of new cases among migrant workers announced at high-tech factories in Zhunan Science Park on Thursday, King Yuan Electronics Corp (KYEC, 京元電子) reported 17, Accton Technology (智邦科技) reported 12, and Foxsemicon Integrated Technology Inc. (京鼎精密科技公司) reported one.
