TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Foxconn founder and prospective Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Terry Gou (郭台銘) met with U.S. President Trump in the Whitehouse to discuss his plans to run for Taiwan's presidency, and he came away from the meeting with an autographed coaster and pen.
After meeting with the president today, Gou told the media that he told Trump if elected president of Taiwan, he would rather be a "peacemaker" than a "troublemaker," reported CNA.
Sporting a ball cap featuring the flags of both Taiwan and the U.S. for his visit with Trump in the Whitehouse, Gou told the media that he gave the president the same hat and in return, Trump gave him a coaster with his autograph and the pen he used.
Gou told the media that when he informed Trump of his decision to seek the KMT nomination for president, he told Gou that it's a "tough job," according to the report.
Gou also said that if he was elected president of Taiwan in the future, he would meet with the U.S. President in Washington. Although China currently does not approve of Taiwanese presidents visiting the Whitehouse, Gou pledged that he would tell Beijing to face up to the existence of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and give it living space.
No sitting U.S. president has met with a Taiwanese presidential candidate before. However, Trump has broken with precedent before when he called Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen to congratulate her on her victory in 2016.
Gou said that his company's investment in a factory in Wisconsin would continue. Gou said that he invited Trump to visit the plant when it is expected to begin production of flat screen panels in May, and Gou said that Trump agreed.
Gou added that he will visit Wisconsin tomorrow.
