TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - The economy should be the most important topic if Foxconn Technology Group chief Terry Gou (郭台銘) decides to run for president, said Wang Wen-yuan (王文淵), chairman of the Chinese National Federation of Industries (CNFI) and head of the Formosa Plastics Group.

For the first time following several negative replies in the past, Gou hinted Tuesday he might actually run for president in the January 11, 2020 presidential election on behalf of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT).

When appearing at a CNFI meeting later in the day, Wang was asked about his view of business people going into politics. ‘In Taiwan, the economy is very important, that’s all I want to say,’ he replied, according to the Central News Agency.

Earlier this month, during a meeting in Kaohsiung, he announced that 34 corporations would invest a total of NT$159.8 billion (US$5.1 billion) in the southern harbor city, but he refused to endorse its KMT mayor, Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) for president, saying he was not a politician.

Wang has been calling on businesses to heed the government’s call to invest more in Taiwan and boost domestic economic growth, CNA reported.

Gou told reporters he would make up his mind about a presidential bid “during these two days.” The KMT later reported he had been a member of the party since 1970, but had not re-registered in 2000. It was not immediately clear whether this might disqualify Gou from registering for presidential primaries, if the KMT decides to organize them.
