TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 68-year-old Japanese man has died after falling 30 meters into a valley while riding a scooter toward Wulai (烏來) in New Taipei City.

Xindian Police Precinct said a witness to the incident stated the man fell into the valley after a collision with another vehicle, on Friday (April 12) night. The suspect car is a taxi, according to Central News Agency.

The Xindian Fire Department rescue squad was alerted to the incident at 10:31 p.m. and dispatched one ambulance and six rescue vehicles to Xinwu Road, in Wulai. Officers from the city’s Zhongzhi station assisted precinct officers in relieving traffic congestion around the site while the fire service attended to the rescue operation.

The injured man was lifted to the roadside by ropes at around 11:15 p.m, when he appeared to be in a stable condition. The man was immediately taken to hospital but his condition began to deteriorate during the journey, rescue staff said, as he started to lose consciousness.

He was rushed to A&E but failed to respond to emergency medical treatment. Doctors pronounced the man dead at 12:19 a.m. on Saturday morning. He had reportedly suffered brain trauma from a head injury incurred during his fall.

Police are now coordinating with the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association to contact the victim’s family.
