TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – New Taipei City signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the province of West Java, Indonesia to promote smart city solutions from Taiwan in the New Southbound Policy partner nation on Tuesday, March 26.
Eman Suryaman, a West Java Provincial Advisor and Economic Chief of the Nahdlatul Ulama political party and religious organization, met with New Taipei Mayor Hou You-Yi (侯友宜) to sign the accord.
The West Java Delegation is in Taiwan to participate in the Smart City Summit and Expo taking place this week.
In a speech at the ceremony, Mayor Hou noted the huge difference in population between New Taipei’s 4 million residents, and the more than 50 million people living in West Java. However, New Taipei’s rapid urbanization and experience with innovative technologies offers plenty of opportunities to collaborate and benefit people in both areas.
Eman also spoke at the event and noted that there are already many Taiwanese companies with business investments in West Java, in industries like textiles, and rubber manufacturing, reports UDN. Indonesia hopes that the two countries can upgrade their relations into more high-tech fields such as medicine and educational technologies.
Eman hopes this MoU will spur the rapid development of West Java. Speaking in mandarin, Eman declared “I hope we will all become one big family.”
Indonesia is set to become one of the world’s top ten economies by 2030, according to and is actively seeking partnerships to help integrate smart technology in the country as it adapts to the fourth industrial revolution.
The MoU with New Taipei will provide a mutually beneficial platform for tech companies and product manufacturers in Taiwan to market their products to Indonesia’s rapidly expanding economy in the years ahead.
