TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - Six major airports in Thailand have declared themselves completely non-smoking, reports said Thursday.

The decision by the Airports of Thailand PLC. (AOT) was motivated by concerns for security and hygiene, the Liberty Times reported.

“Every area of AOT’s 6 international airports, both inside and outside the buildings, is designated as non-smoking area,” AOT said.

The six airports include Bangkok’s Don Mueang, which is mostly used by budget carriers and domestic airlines, the capital’s main airport Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north, and Phuket and Hat Yai in the south.

The closure of the smoking areas inside the airports was a consequence of the Tobacco Products Control Act passed in 2017.

An estimated 38 million tourists visited Thailand in 2018, or 3 million more than the previous year, according to government statistics.
