TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A crew member on board a Taiwanese fishing vessel operating in the North Atlantic Ocean went overboard the vessel and was lost at sea this past Sunday, March 11.
The news from the Chen Hsing No. 1 was reported on Wednesday evening by media in Bermuda, who say that Bermuda authorities only received the report of the lost crew member Monday morning.
The vessel was reportedly operating far from any land, approximately 320 nautical miles northeast of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda. The man who went overboard was also thought to be a poor swimmer.
The Chen Hsing, along with ships in the area, including a French merchant vessel, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Bermuda Coast Guard, performed a search until nightfall on Monday, with no sign of the man who went overboard.
No personal details about the crew member, or the circumstances of how he ended up overboard have been reported by Bermuda Media, the Royal Gazette.
The crew member’s next of kin have reportedly been notified by authorities in Taiwan.
