TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - The Navy will demand compensation after a Saudi-registered tanker smashed into one of its frigates in the harbor of Keelung, reports said Saturday.
The NCC Sama was entering port at 1:30 a.m. Saturday when it hit the Ning Yang frigate FF-938 in the middle of its port side, the Central News Agency reported.
Nobody was injured in the accident, but the Ministry of National Defense said it would seek compensation for the damage to its ship "according to the law."
The Sama was scheduled to unload 3,100 tons of ethylene glycol in Keelung, CNA reported. Neither ship showed any leaks following the collision.
The Ning Yang served as the Knox-class frigate Aylwin in the U.S. Navy from 1971 to 1992 before it was sold to Taiwan. The frigates, now known as the Chi Yang-class, patrol along Taiwan’s eastern coast with submarines as their major concern. The Ning Yang’s most recent round of maintenance dates from October 2017, according to media reports.
