TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Calla lilies in the Zhuzihu (竹子湖) area of Yangmingshan National Park are blooming. People who come to the national park to enjoy cherry blossoms during the 228 Peace Memorial Day holiday can also go to nearby Zhuzihu to enjoy the elegant white flowers, according to Taipei City’s Department of Economic Development (DOED).
The DOED said in a posting on its Facebook fan page that this year’s “Zhuzihu Calla Lily Festival” will be held from Mar. 29 through Apr. 28. However, the department added that because of the warmer weather in the winter, calla lilies in the Zhuzihu area have bloomed earlier than in the past, this year in time for people to enjoy them during the 228 holiday.
The Zhuzihu community is famous for its calla lilies, Hydrangea flowers, and landscape of farming villages. Local farmers grow the flowers and vegetables for commercial purposes.
When enjoying flowers in the Zhuzihu community, visitors can also visit the Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field Story House (竹子湖蓬萊米故事館) to learn about the area's rice plantation and the history of the community.
Those planning to go are recommended to take public transportation as traffic control will be enforced during the holiday.
