TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – On Jan. 1, Taiwan’s Navy headquarters released a short promotional video entitled “Toward 2019,” which showcases some of the Navy’s vessels and equipment along with some young troops being trained to defend the nation.
According to a report from Liberty Times, there were several surprises in the video for military enthusiasts, including footage of a Hsiung Feng II (雄二反艦飛彈) missile being fired from land platform, as well as the first public footage of a Hsiung Feng III supersonic missile being launched from a naval vessel.
The short glimpse of the rocket technology at 1:49 in the video was enough to excite some military buffs, according to LTN.
The Hsiung Feng III supersonic missile, designed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, is a very critical new asset in Taiwan’s defensive arsenal.
It is reported to be highly efficient at a range of 150 km, and can hit stationary targets with near precision up to 200 km. The range can reportedly be increased up to 400 km, with a corresponding decline in precision.
The incredibly high speed of the missile, capable of reaching mach 3, makes it a formidable anti-ship missile capable of overcoming most ship’s defensive steel plating.
The short video clip, almost two minutes long, declares that “The new Navy sets sail, to safeguard our territorial waters.” It can be viewed below.
