Canadian Trade Office in Taipei to bestow friendship award on premier

Taipei, July 9 (CNA) The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT) announced Thursday that it will present the annual Canada-Taiwan Friendship Award to Premier Liu Chao-shiuan for his long-term contribution to strengthening the links between Canadians and Taiwanese.
An award ceremony is scheduled to be held later Thursday to present the award to Liu, according to the CTOT.
"Premier Liu is a valued partner whose leadership and vision has created a lasting legacy for Canada-Taiwan cooperation in the fields of education and science and technology," CTOT Executive Director Ron MacIntosh said in a press statement.
According to the press statement, Liu has a long-standing connection with Canada, as he graduated from University of Sherbrooke with a Master's degree in Chemistry and from University of Toronto with a Ph.D in the same discipline.
During his tenure as head of the transportation and communications ministry from 1993-1996, Liu was the first Taiwan minister to visit Canada and more significantly, he initiated a highly successful science and technology memorandum of understanding as chair of the National Science Council in 1997.
According to CTOT, the award was established in 2008 and the first winner was Pierre Loisel, a Canadian environmentalist who has lived in Taiwan for over 40 years and who has made enormous contributions to Taiwan’s high tech industry and to organic farming.
