Brazil senate president urged to step down

Three political parties say former President Jose Sarney must step down as leader of Brazil's Senate while allegations of nepotism and other irregularities are investigated.
The conservative Democrats, leftist Socialism and Freedom Party and centrist Social Democracy Party said Tuesday Sarney should step down _ at least temporarily _ to ensure his noninterference in the probe.
In recent weeks, Sarney's name has been linked by the media to the appointment of relatives and friends to senate administrative positions for which they were paid without ever having worked.
Sarney also allegedly approved the hiring, at the Senates' expense, of a butler for Maranhao state's governor _ his daughter Roseana.
Sarney denies any wrongdoing.
