Ex-Belgian premier to lead EU liberals

Former Belgian premier Guy Verhofstadt has been chosen as the leader of the Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament.
The group's 80 lawmakers elected Verhofstadt to lead it Tuesday before the new EU assembly begins its five-year term next month.
Verhofstadt stood unopposed and replaces British lawmaker Graham Watson, who is running for president of the 736-member EU parliament.
Verhofstadt won a seat in May's European elections after stepping down as Belgium's prime minister last year.
An ardent pro-European, he has promised to push for more EU powers to resolve the economic crisis across the 27-nation bloc.
The Liberal Democrats are the third largest group in the assembly behind the center-right European People's Party and the Socialists.
