First mass swine flu infection

Taiwan's health authorities reported yesterday the first mass infection of swine flu in the country, which involved seven adolescents from the United States, Canada and Hong Kong.
The confirmation of these cases brought to 68 the total number of recorded influenza A(H1N1) infections in Taiwan, according to the Central Epidemics Command Center (CECC).
The seven latest victims - four boys and three girls - were all ethnic Chinese between the ages of 10 and 20, said CECC spokesman Shih Wen-yi.
They arrived in Taiwan June 21 to take part in a Mandarin-learning program and experienced an onset of swine flu symptoms June 25, Shih said.
The center is still investigating if the victims contracted the A(H1N1) virus in Taiwan or were infected in their countries of origin, he said.
