Taoyuan County holds journalism training camp

Thirty school teachers and administrative personnel from local junior high and elementary schools will participate in a journalism training camp that starts today in Taoyuan County. The camp focuses on interview skills and writing on culture and education.
The three-day camp offers both theoretical and practical lessons to participants, who will eventually cover cultural and educational events for the E-paper published by the Education Department of Taoyuan County Government.
The lessons vary from the basics of E-paper production, planning topics for feature stories, interview skills, in-depth coverage, and digital image production. The organizer of the camp, Datan Elementary School Principal Chen Hsiu-hui has invited media professionals to be instructors. They include magazine editors, TV journalists, newspaper editors and reporters, and computer programs. Among them, Susanne DeVore, editor at the Taiwan News, will teach participants how to write English headlines.
The monthly E-paper which started in November 2005 focuses on in-depth coverage of educational policies and developments, current issues, and feature stories. There are 35 issues to date.
"News coverage of education issues in traditional media are usually rather short and not very specific," said Chiang Hui-ling, an official of the Education Department. "Thus we came up with the idea of the E-paper on education in Taoyuan. To recruit teachers or administrative personnel as reporters helps the publication get first-hand information."
After the training, teachers-turned-reporters will start reporting from Aug. 1 2009 to July 31 2010.
