London mayor: Olympic stadium could stay at 80,000

London mayor Boris Johnson says the main London 2012 stadium may not now be scaled back after the Olympics so it can host matches at the 2018 World Cup should the city's bid for that event prove successful.
Previously, Johnson had said it would be too expensive to retain the stadium's maximum capacity of 80,000, instead backing plans for the venue to be reduced to 25,000 seats.
But Johnson told The Associated Press on Tuesday: "I'd be very foolish to rule it out now."
Johnson has shifted his position with London now hoping to play a major role in England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
"We are already a leading contender to have the 2018 World Cup and I think the stadium in the Olympic Park is well worth considering as an additional venue," Johnson said.
