Zurich Opera names Luisi its next music director

The Zurich Opera has named noted Italian conductor Fabio Luisi as its next general music director starting in 2012.
Luisi, the current director of Dresden's Semperoper, on Tuesday welcomed his appointment at a "wonderful house with an exceptional orchestra."
The 50-year-old will take rostrum 40 times a year starting in the 2012-2013 season. The contract is for five years.
Luisi ends Zurich's search for a successor to Austrian Franz Welser-Moest, who will become music director of the Vienna State Opera in 2010. Welser-Moest also has a contract with the Cleveland Orchestra running through 2017.
Zurich's orchestra said in a statement that it was looking forward to working with Luisi, "one of the most sought after conductors worldwide."
