Slovenian pulls out of race for new IAEA head

The International Atomic Energy Agency says Slovenia's candidate has pulled out of the race to succeed Mohamed ElBaradei as director-general.
Spokesman Ayhan Evrensel says Ernest Petric announced his decision in a letter Tuesday to IAEA board of governors chairwoman Taous Feroukhi.
Petric says in the letter obtained by The Associated Press that he is withdrawing to "help to surpass the existing divisions" in the 35-nation board and to "contribute to a timely election."
The Vienna-based agency is set to vote Thursday on ElBaradei's replacement. Those still in the running are Yukiya Amano of Japan, Spain's Luis Echavarri, South Africa's Abdul Sabad Minty and Jean-Pol Poncelet of Belgium.
ElBaradei steps down in November.
