44 children abused every day in Taiwan

Taipei, June 30 (CNA) Despite widespread calls to respect life and protect children's rights and interests, an average of 44 children were abused in Taiwan per day in the first five months of the year amid rising domestic violence.
A total of 33,443 domestic violence cases were reported in Taiwan during the first five months of this year, a 10.29 percent increase over the same period a year ago, according to statistics released by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI).
Of the more than 33,000 family violence cases, 6,647 cases involved children and teenagers, Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF) CEO Wang Ming-jen told a news conference.
According to Wang, 85 percent of the abusers were parents and the leading factor behind their behavior was that they lacked an understanding of parent-child relationships.
More than 60 percent of the parents surveyed acknowledged that they do not know how to deal with their children, he explained.
In 2008, 78,974 domestic violence cases were reported by police, schools, hospitals and social workers, of which 17,086 were related to child abuse, MOI statistics show. The two numbers set record highs in Taiwan.
