Governing Democrats ahead in Albania's election

The governing Democrats are narrowly ahead in Albania's parliamentary election as vote-counting from Sunday's vote continues. Final results are not expected for days.
Election officials say that with 80 percent of ballots counted by 10 a.m. Tuesday (0800 GMT), a coalition led by Prime Minister Sali Berisha's Democratic Party has 46.55 percent of the nationwide vote.
Tirana Mayor Edi Rama's Socialist-led coalition has 45.73 percent and a smaller leftist coalition has 5.55 percent.
The final results are expected later this week. Parliament's 140 seats are allocated according to a regional system.
The conduct of the ballot is seen as a crucial test of the Balkan country's hopes of EU membership. International monitors have reported signs of both improvement and violations.
