Three to five typhoons expected to hit Taiwan this year

Taipei, June 30 (CNA) Three to five typhoons will hit Taiwan this year, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecasted Tuesday, while reminding people to always be prepared during the typhoon season from July to September.
The bureau also predicted that 24 to 27 tropical storms and typhoons may form over the northwestern Pacific Ocean this year. That is slightly less than the historical average.
According to a CWB report, over the past five years, an average of 24.2 tropical storms and typhoons have formed over the western North Pacific each year, less than the historical average of 26.6 a year.
However, Taiwan got hit by 4.4 of the storms each year during the five-year period, more than the historical average of 3.1, the report said.
CWB statistics showed that the average annual loss caused by typhoons reached over NT$ 17 billion (US$518.6 million) in Taiwan, accounting for up to 85 percent of all damage from severe weather.
