French senate approves restitution of Maori heads

The French Senate has approved a proposed law that would return to New Zealand mummified Maori heads in the collections of public museums in France.
The proposed law is intended to clear up legal difficulties faced by a museum in Normandy that decided in 2007 to return a mummified and tattooed head in a local historical museum.
The law must still be voted on by France's National Assembly. If adopted, France would be able join the U.S., Australia and other European countries in returning Maori objects to their native land.
New Zealand has for years sought the return of preserved Maori heads and other human remains that were collected in the West and displayed in museum galleries.
The proposal passed unanimously Monday.
