Norway's Yara shuts down Belgian plant

Fertilizers group Yara International ASA announced Monday that it was shutting down its plant in Belgium after an explosion injured two employees and caused serious damage to the facility.
Yara spokesman Asle Skredderberget said the plant suffered "substantial" damage in the blast, which occurred Saturday, and that the company has sent a team to investigate.
"It was enough damage that it will take a while to assess how it will affect operations _ and for how long," he said. "We're talking months, not weeks."
It was the second explosion at a Yara facility in the past seven months. In December, a fertilizer plant in southern Norway exploded during a planned shutdown.
According to a company report on the incident, the explosion was caused by "weakness in the (plant's) structure design as well as in operating procedures."
The Belgian plant, near Tertre, accounts for 5 percent of Yara's total ammonia output and 15 percent of its total fertilizer production.
