Skier Alphand injured in motorcycle race

Former French ski champion Luc Alphand had surgery Monday on a spinal injury he sustained in a motorcycle race.
Alphand's managers, GPS Performance, said in a statement Monday that Alphand had an operation on a damaged spinal column in the southern French city of Clermont-Ferrand.
He was taken to hospital by helicopter after the accident during the Rand'Auvergne all-terrain motorcycle race on Sunday.
Alphand was a World Cup downhill champion for three consecutive years starting in 1995 before turning to auto racing. He won the Dakar rally in 2006.
