Kuwait court convicts 4 of embezzling $100 million

Four former employees of a Kuwaiti oil tanker company were convicted of embezzling more than $100 million from the state-owned firm and sentenced to up to 55 years in prison, according to court documents released Monday.
The defendants _ two Kuwaitis, a Jordanian and a man with British and Australian citizenship _ were found guilty Sunday of siphoning the money from illegal transactions between 1984 and 1992.
The ruling was the result of a retrial requested by the prosecution after an appeals court overturned 1996 convictions for three of the defendants due to a technicality.
Only one of the defendants _ a Kuwaiti extradited from the United States _ is in custody. The others were tried in absentia. They received prison sentences ranging from 25 to 55 years. They were also ordered to repay the money and were fined an identical sum.
Kuwait's oil minister at the time the illegal transactions took place, Sheik Ali Al Khalifa Al Sabah, was originally implicated in the case. A special judicial investigative panel dismissed the graft accusations against him in 2007.
