Police chief among 10 killed in Afghan gunbattle

An Afghan official says the police chief of the southern province of Kandahar was among 10 officers killed during a gunbattle.
Ahmad Wali Karzai said police chief Matiullah Qati was killed Monday during the battle inside a government complex in the city of Kandahar. Karzai is the president of Kandahar's provincial council and the brother of President Hamid Karzai.
It was not immediately clear who shot Qati.
Mohammad Khan, another government official, said Afghan and U.S. Special Forces had moved into the heavily protected complex and warned that a suicide bomber was in the area. When police arrived, gunfire broke out.
Kandahar is the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban, the Islamic militia that ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s.
