NIreland: Outlawed Protestants turn in weapons

Northern Ireland's disarmament chief says he has witnessed a major weapons handover by the Ulster Volunteer Force, an outlawed Protestant group that terrorized Irish Catholics for decades.
But retired Canadian Gen. John de Chastelain declined to say in Monday's statement whether he believes the group has surrendered its entire stockpile of weapons. He describes the handover and destruction of arms at a secret June 12 event as "a major decommissioning event involving arms, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices."
Leaders of the Ulster Volunteer Force declared Saturday in Belfast that the group had fully disarmed. De Chastelain, who has pursued paramilitary disarmament since 1997, is expected to give the British and Irish governments a report on the disarmament in August.
