New Zealand gunman dies after shooting spree

A gunman in a wheelchair who fired at his neighborhood more than 100 times with a shotgun and high-powered rifle was shot dead by police after he wounded two people, police said Monday.
Police shot Shane Sime in his home Sunday night in a suburban neighborhood of Christchurch, in the south.
Police said Sime, 42, was in a wheelchair because of a degenerative muscle disease.
Sime, a licensed gun owner and gun club member, had told family earlier Sunday that he had depression, Detective Superintendent Brett Kane told reporters.
Police were called after a volley of shots was fired mid-evening Sunday. They evacuated about 25 nearby residents from the cul-de-sac as the shooting continued.
"We're talking of a large number of shots fired indiscriminately over a period of time," Kane said.
A neighbor and an officer were hit by shotgun pellets, but neither was seriously hurt, Kane said.
He said Sime was shot dead when police returned fire.
Neighbors on Monday told police and media that Sime had been involved in several previous gunshot incidents in the street.
