Southern Philippine bomb blast kills 1, wounds 15

Officials say a bomb planted by suspected Muslim rebels has exploded prematurely in a public market in the southern Philippines, killing a would-be attacker and wounding 15 civilians.
Military spokesman Maj. Randolph Cabangbang says the pre-dawn Monday blast ripped through the market in Datu Odin Sinsuat township in Maguindanao province, which has been the scene of clashes between government forces and Muslim separatist rebels.
Eid Kabalu, spokesman for the rebel Moro Islamic Liberation Front, has denied his group is responsible.
A more violent rebel group, the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf, was blamed for Sunday's ambush on nearby Basilan island that killed seven policemen.
