Venezuela inflation rises to 28.3 percent in April

Venezuela says inflation rose slightly in April the government instituted a sales tax hike.
Venezuela's Central Bank says nationwide inflation hit 28.3 percent last month _ up from 28.1 percent in March.
Consumer prices rose as President Hugo Chavez raised the sales tax to 12 percent from 9 percent.
The move aims to boost state coffers as oil income falls.
The bank said Tuesday that transportation fares increased in some cities, while the price of some foods including fish rose during Easter holidays.
Nationwide inflation reached 30.9 percent last year _ the highest in Latin America. Venezuela's budget predicts inflation will be 15 percent for 2009.
