Blog opened to promote Yushan as world wonder

'Ambassadors' to post articles and videos recording their daily activities

Blog opened to promote Yushan as world wonder

A dedicated blog has been opened to promote Taiwan's campaign to get Yushan, or Jade Mountain, chosen as one of the world's natural wonders, now that the second stage in the global online voting for the honor is underway, the Yushan National Park Headquarters said yesterday.
The 3,952-meter mountain, the highest in northeast Asia, has so far maintained the top position in the "mountains, volcanoes" category in the second round of voting for the world's new seven natural wonders organized by the Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation, which is scheduled to end July 7.
On the blog located at http: //www.wretch.cc/blog/loveysnp, the seven Yushan publicity ambassadors - selected last month through an online vote - will post articles, photos or videos recording their daily activities, such as their hikes up the mountain and their cycling tours around Taiwan, officials at the headquarters said.
They believe that the blog will deepen the public's knowledge about Yushan and share Yushan's beauty with people around the world.
In the second round of the voting, 261 natural sites in 222 countries, including Loch Ness in Scotland, the Grand Canyon in Arizona, Mount Fuji in Japan, the Yangtze River in China and Jeju Island in South Korea, are competing in seven categories for the title of the "New Seven Wonders of the Natural World."
Yushan is the only natural attraction from Taiwan to make the list of contenders in any category, and is up against Mount Everest, Mount Fuji, Mount Olympus and K2 Mountain in the mountains and volcanoes category.
The top 11 sites chosen in each of the seven categories by July 7 will then be reviewed by a panel of experts headed by Federico Mayor Zaragoza, former director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), who will select three nominees in each category.
The 21 nominees will be put to the final round of the worldwide online vote in 2010 and 2011 to select the top seven wonders in the landscape, island, mountain, cave, forest, lake and seascape categories.
Yushan, located along the boundaries of Chiayi, Nantou and Kaohsiung counties, is known for its diverse wildlife and ecology. To boost Yushan's chances of being selected, the national park headquarters urged the public to cast their vote for the mountain by visiting the website http://www.new7wonders.com.
