EU launches online consumer guide

The European Union has launched a new online guide informing consumers of their rights when surfing or shopping on the Internet.
The Web site, which went online Tuesday, aims to give practical advice to citizens about EU consumer law.
The site sets out rights consumers should be aware of when shopping online, downloading music, protecting personal data, and what rights they have when signing up with a broadband provider.
The European Commission says just under 50 percent of households in the 27-nation EU now have high-speed Internet connection, however only 12 percent of Web users feel safe making online transactions to purchase goods or services.
The EU says its one-stop site offers consumers a handy reference to the bloc's set of consumer protection rules.
