Serb officer's murder acquittal overturned

The U.N. Yugoslav tribunal has convicted a Serbian army officer on appeal of helping to murder 194 Croatian prisoners of war and increased his jail sentence to 17 years.
A lower court in 2007 convicted Maj. Veselin Sljivancanin of enabling the beatings and torture of prisoners seized from a hospital in Vukovar, Croatia, in 1991 at the start of the Balkan wars. But it acquitted him of aiding and abetting murder.
However, appeals judges Tuesday overturned that acquittal. It said that Sljivancanin could have prevented the prisoners' murder and found the lower court's 5-year sentence too lenient.
The tribunal's decision delivered Tuesday in The Hague made no change in the 20-year sentence given to Sljivancanin's superior officer, Mile Mrksic.
