Taichung County to hold art exhibition in memory of Qi Baishi

Taichung, May 5 (CNA) An art exhibition in memory of Qi Baishi (1864-1957) , one of the most famous contemporary Chinese artists, will open Saturday at the Taichung County Seaport Art Center and run until June 21.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Taichung County Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Qi Baishi Memorial Hall in Xiangtan City, China's Hunan province, where Qi was born.
A total of 71 paintings and carved art works by Qi will be put on display. Many of the works are borrowed from the collection kept by the Qi Baishi Memorial Hall in Xiangtan.
The organizers of the event said they will invite Qi's grandson, Qi Youlai, 74, from China to join local artists and their counterparts from China to demonstrate the art of painting and Chinese calligraphy at the opening of the exhibition. Their paintings will also be on display at the exhibition.
Qi Baishi is recognized as probably the most noted contemporary Chinese artist because of the whimsical and often playful style of his watercolor works.
He did not have any formal education or training in the field of art, but managed to master various techniques by himself, including calligraphy, seal-carving and carpentry.
The subjects of his paintings included almost everything, such as birds, other animals, human figures, plants, flowers, vegetables, fruits and scenery. Many of his works demonstrated his childhood experience with rural life.
He died in Beijing in 1957 at the age of 93.
