Police: Homemade liquor kills 15 in eastern India

Police say at least 15 people have died and 48 have been hospitalized in eastern India after they drank locally brewed alcohol that was apparently toxic.
Senior local health official Rabikinkar Nayek says he expects the death toll to rise.
He says most of the victims drank the liquor and fell sick Sunday.
Police official Raj Kanojia says the victims bought the deadly brew from three unlicensed shops in East Midnapore district in West Bengal state, and that authorities will crack down on distilleries and shops that sell the toxic brew.
Illicitly brewed liquor is popular with laborers and deaths from it are common in Indian villages and towns. It is often spiked with pesticides or chemicals to increase its potency.
