Spain cycling federation assists Valverde vs. CONI

The Spanish cycling federation said Tuesday that it will attend Alejandro Valverde's anti-doping hearing with Italian prosecutors next week.
The Italian Olympic Committee wants to ban the Spanish rider for two years for his alleged involvement in the Operation Puerto drug scandal. Valverde will go before prosecutors in Rome on Monday.
In February, CONI confronted Valverde with DNA evidence and documents that allegedly showed he was in contact with a doctor at the center of the blood doping case in Spain.
But the case, which originally broke in May 2006, has failed to generate any bans within Spain due to the country's previous doping laws, which did recognize doping as a crime against health.
"We want to protect the fundamental right of athletes to participate in cycling events free of doping, guaranteeing the equity and equality in cycling," the federation said in the statement posted on its Web site.
More than 50 cyclists were originally linked to the Puerto doping ring.
