EU Parliament passes import ban on seal products

The European Parliament has passed a bill that will impose an import ban on seal products, a move meant to force an end to Canada's annual seal hunt, which is the world's largest.
The bill says commercial seal hunting, notably in Canada, is "inherently inhumane."
It passed the EU assembly by 550 to 49 votes on Tuesday. It is expected to be endorsed by EU governments in the coming weeks to ensure it is in place before next year's seal hunt.
The ban offers narrow exemptions for Inuit communities from Canada and Greenland to continue their traditional hunts but bars them from large-scale trading of pelts, oils or meats in Europe. Canada and Norway say they will challenge the ban at the World Trade Organization.
